NU Sports activities – Scorching Second Half Run Sends Wildcats into WNIT Candy 16


Toledo, Ohio – Northwestern continued its postseason run and advanced to the WNIT Sweet 16 following a thrilling 54-47 victory over the Toledo Rockets in front of a hostile crowd at Savage Arena on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Wildcats trailed by as many as 16 points midway through the third quarter before closing the game on a blistering 32-9 run.
 
Lindsey Pulliam led the way with a game-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds. She also scored her 1,000th career point in the third quarter, becoming the fastest player in Wildcat history to accomplish the feat. Pulliam led all players with 11 points in the second half and also came up clutch at the charity stripe down the stretch, finishing a perfect 7-of-7.
 
Another big second half performance came from Veronica Burton, who scored 10 of her 13 total points and recorded three of her four total steals in the final 20 minutes of the game. This marks the seventh time this season Burton has scored at least 10 points, along with the sixth time this year she has come up with four or more steals. The first-year from Newton, Mass. is now tied for the Big Ten lead with 65 steals on the season.
 
The #B1GCats outscored Toledo 34-14 in the second half and dominated in nearly every facet, finishing with nine steals while holding Toledo to just 24-percent (6-of-25) shooting from the field. The ‘Cats were also a force in the interior, finishing with 18 points in the paint and eight second chance points while outrebounding the Rockets 23-15 in the second frame.
 
Contributing to the Wildcats’ dominant post play was Abbie Wolf, who finished with 11 points, three steals and two rebounds. Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, marking her 22nd game this season with double-digit rebounds, along with five points and three steals.
 
This is the third time the Wildcats have advanced to the Sweet 16 during the Joe McKeown era, having also made it in 2010 and 2014. Next up, the Wildcats will travel to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers on Wednesday March 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
