Massachusetts police tweet reveals they monitor political activists

It seems like it is getting more durable today to cover the truth that you are surreptitiously monitoring left-wing political activists. And by chance tweeting proof of that truth certain would not make it any simpler.

Massachusetts state police are coping with that actuality this week after a Twitter slip-up revealed that they have been protecting tabs on a variety of political teams within the space. And, shock, it was anti-Trump and anti police-brutality teams which are under the cops’ watchful eyes.

Helpfully, The Guardian recaps what went down. While tweeting a warning to residents potentially affected by the tragic gas explosions rocking the Boston suburbs this previous week, the state police included a photograph of a map of different areas that may require evacuation.

“Reminder: all residents of Lawrence/Andover/N[orth] Andover who have Columbia Gas must evacuate, as should anyone else who smells gas,” learn the now-deleted tweet.

But it is the picture, helpfully saved before the police realized their mistake, that tells the bigger story.

It seems that whoever initially tweeted the pic — perhaps unaware {that a} Twitter picture preview would not present the full picture and that you may click on to broaden — forgot to crop it. The picture was of a pc monitor, and several other browser bookmarks are clearly seen.

Among these embrace bookmarks to the pages of the Coalition to Organize and Mobilize Boston Against Trump (COMBAT), Mass Action Against Police Brutality, Facebook MA Activism, and a progressive-curated calendar of anti-Trump rallies.

The police are actually protecting tabs on peaceable left-wing activist teams.

Yeah, oops.

But to listen to David Procopio, the state police director of media communications, inform it, this isn’t in any respect what it appears to be like like.

“We don’t gather details about – nor, frankly, can we care about – any group’s beliefs or opinions,” he informed the Guardian.

Which is completely plausible. After all, who’re you going to imagine? Paid police spokesperson Procopio, or your mendacity eyes?

Maybe the Massachusetts state police ought to spend rather less time monitoring left-wing teams and a bit of extra time studying the ins and outs of Twitter.
