Liverpool face harm blow for Spurs conflict as key participant is pressured to attend on health check

Jurgen Klopp could be left to consider whether Jordan Henderson will be fit to play Tottenham Hotspur as Premier League football returns after the international break at the weekend.

The Liverpool captain has made 25 league appearances so far this season as he competes with summer signing Fabinho for game time and started for England in their 5-0 win over Czech Republic in Euro 2020 qualfiying.

He played the full 90 minutes, having lined up alongside Spurs pair Eric Dier and Dele Alli, and has joined the duo in the list of players who could be missing at Anfield as the two top six sides face off in a match that will help to decide the fate of the title race.

Manchester City have a game in hand but trail Liverpool by two points in second place. A victory or draw for Tottenham could hand the reigning champions an advantage in their mission to pin back Klopp’s team.

According to Sky Sports, Henderson is a doubt for England’s next match against Montenegro, while Dier has been ruled out of that game. Dele is also a doubt.

The 28-year-old is usually deployed as a holding midfielder but can also play a box-to-box role and is regarded as an important leader in the Liverpool dressing room.

He was Steven Gerrard’s partner in midfield during the club’s last push a title win in 2014 as goals by Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez were not enough to win the Premier League.

Spurs were tipped as a third force in the battle for the title earlier in the season before disappointing defeats to Wolverhampton Wanderers and later Burnley that increased the gap between the top two and Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

A victory at Anfield could increase the gap on Arsenal in fourth place if results elsewhere go their way.
