Kobe Bryant advised cleaning out Lakers front office to lure LeBron James, report says | NBA

Kobe Bryant sought after heads to roll in Los Angeles if it intended LeBron James taking part in for the Lakers.

According to The Athletic, Bryant informed Lakers proprietor Jeanie Buss in February 2017 to utterly rebuild the team’s front office in hopes of signing James right through loose company in 2018.

“Cut it all out at once. I know it’s hard to do, but if you want to turn this ship around, and turn it around sooner rather than later, then you’ve got to make those hard decisions,” Bryant stated. “Jeanie, I know who we’re trying to get; we know who we’re trying to get, so that player is not going to come here with all of this s— going on. It’s not going to happen. So if you do want to have that focus, and go after that player, then I’m telling you that you’ve gotta clean house, and you’ve gotta just reshuffle the deck and start anew.”

Buss took Byant’s recommendation and fired normal supervisor Mitch Kupchak and head of basketball operations Jim Buss, her brother, later that month.

“As a player, it’s like, listen, it’s a cultural thing. You’ve got to have the right culture around, especially for (LeBron) at this stage of his career,” Bryant said. “You don’t need to come to a team and take care of a host of bulls—, proper? You don’t need to come right here and be a part of a company the place the partitions are speaking and stuff is getting out left and proper and you’ve got this camp and that camp. You don’t need to do this. So I stated, ‘You’ve were given to get started anew.’”

Then, just as Bryant’s crystal ball predicted, Magic Johnson and new Lakers GM Rob Pelinka signed James to a four-year deal in July 2018.
