Your confusion can be completely comprehensible.

A number of Pixel smartphone homeowners discovered themselves with small thriller on their palms earlier this week, after they observed that the battery-saver characteristic on their telephones had randomly engaged — regardless of the telephones having virtually full fees. Who, or what, was guilty? A glitch? Perhaps a forgotten setting, toggled on way back?

Nope. It would, the truth is, be Google — remotely altering settings on individuals’s telephones within the background with no notification or warning. And oh yeah, Google did not even imply to.

Android Police observed the unusual prevalence, reporting {that a} “substantial number of Pixel owners” claimed to be affected by what at first appeared like a bug. Importantly, battery saving mode modifications the best way your cellphone works with a view to (you guessed it) protect battery life. This means, amongst different issues, that apps would not refresh until first opened — not a great state of affairs for somebody ready for an necessary electronic mail, for instance.

According to a Google statement on r/GooglePixel, this was brought on by a small slip up on the corporate’s finish.

“[Some] of you may have noticed that battery saver turned on automatically today,” learn the submit. “This was an internal experiment to test battery saving features that was mistakenly rolled out to more users than intended. We have now rolled battery saver settings back to default. Please configure to your liking. Sorry for the confusion.”

Which, that clears the whole lot up then, proper? Yes and no.

While Google with the ability to push updates to Pixel telephones is significant for all types of security causes, the truth that the corporate could ship out an “internal experiment” to shoppers’ telephones with out these Pixel homeowners even being conscious it occurred does increase a number of questions.

Namely, has something like this occurred before? And, if that’s the case, has this resulted in any issues for Pixel homeowners up to now?

We reached out to Google in an try to unravel this, however acquired no reply as of press time.

While mistakenly altering a cellphone’s settings to allow battery-saving mode on the unsuitable time, after which remotely rapidly fixing the problem, is not that massive of a deal, on the finish of the day it does function a bigger reminder of just how little management we have now over our personal gadgets.

And hey, subsequent time your cellphone does one thing inexplicable and peculiar, you now get to surprise if somebody in a nondescript Google workplace constructing by chance clicked the unsuitable mouse button. Fun, proper?
